Analysis of the short story «Cat in the Rain» by Ernest Hemingway (2nd Draft)

Ernest Hemingway’s “Cat in The Rain” is a short story revealing a young couple’s relationship and misunderstanding. The wife longs to be loved and be protected yet her husband wants to be left alone reading.
The action takes place in an Italian hotel. The main characters are a young American couple.Looking through the window, on a rainy day, the wife sees a cat in the rain hiding underneath a table. She feels sorry for the cat and she decides to go and get it. While her husband is busy reading a book the woman goes after the cat but it is no longer under the table. The wife liked the hotel owner, she even says it herself. He like the way he treats her,in a way her husband never did. When she comes back into her room she starts complaining to her husband and that she wants a cat, long hair, new clothes and other goods. The husband doesn’t seem to care much about his wife’s desires. The story ends with a maid knocking at the door holding a tortoise-shell cat for the American woman.
The main characters of the story are the wife and her husband,George. “The American Wife” as she is called in the text remains unnamed throughout the entire story. Once the author begins his story, she is presented as “The American wife” nevertheless later on she is referred as to “the American girl”. This “American wife/girl” is the main protagonist of the story, a young lady who is on holiday with her husband. The author changes dramatically his opinion about the “wife” and calls her “The American girl” when she starts acting like a child and choses to call a cat “kitty” several times: («I’m going down and get that kitty»/ «I want to have a kitty to sit on my lap»/ “I want a kitty”); She never stops complaining about the things she wants: (” And I want to eat at a table with my own silver and I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brush my hair out in front of a mirror and I want a kitty and I want some new clothes.” )
Another character of the story is the American girl/wife’s husband named George. Even though at the beginning he is ready to go and get the cat for his but later on George doesn’t care about anything but his reading: “‘Oh, shut up and get something to read,’ George said. He was reading again.”/” George was reading again.”. Her husband doesn’t listen or care much about what his wife is saying.
The owner of the hotel is a minor character of the story. The American girl/wife looked smitten with the padrone whereas there is no mention of her being in love with her husband and vice versa, not even a slightest bit:” The wife liked him. She liked the deadly serious way he received any complaints. She liked his dignity. She liked the way he wanted to serve her. ” There is something about the hotel owner that inspires an instant admiration for the American girl/wife, he treats her the way her husband doesn’t:” As the American girl passed the office, the padrone bowed from his desk. Something felt very small and tight inside the girl. The padrone made her feel very small and at the same time really important. She had a momentary feeling of being of supreme importance.”
One of the themes revealed in the story that has a crucial impact on the couple’s relationship is the lack of communication that further, in the wife’s case, develops into complete loneliness. Her husband is the one who enjoys reading books better than listening to his own wife. Hence, she remains the one tortured by this kind of alienation. Next to be mentioned is selfishness which both: the wife and her husband are to be blamed for. She is the one complaining about what she wants ‘’I want…I want…I want’’ whereas he chooses his book over his wife all the time. Both of them don’t care about anyone else but their own personality, their own will and desires.
The title of the story “Cat in The Rain” is extremely symbolic as the cat may be perceived as the child the wife is yearning for . She looks for somebody she could take care of: “I wanted it so much, ‘I don’t know why I wanted it so much. I wanted that poor kitty. It isn’t any fun to be a poor kitty out in the rain.’’ Anyways, the last statement might be interpreted in a different way as the wife is the one comparing herself with the cat. She herself, might have been through a tough period in her life where she needed somebody’s support. In sustaining these two hypothesis, the author retells about the cat using “SHE” insteas of “IT” The cat was trying to make herself so compact that she would not be dripped on.”
In order to draw the reader’s attention the author uses repetitions like: “I wanted it so much. I don’t know why I wanted it so much. I wanted that poor kitty.” The author points out the husband’s one and only activity which is reading: “Her husband went on reading”, “George was on the bed, reading”, “George was reading again”. The word “rain” is used as a repetition through the whole story and as a symbol for their unhappy family life: “It was made of bronze and glistened in the rain. It was raining. The rain dripped from the palm trees.”
To conclude, the author highlights the fact that the lack of communication and selfishness put a relationship in jeopardy. It is such a hollow little life that one leads if not showing any kind of affection yet being ingnorant and selfish with the person he/she loves. It is a sort of cautionary tale that one should listen to while being in any kind of relationship.

Analysis of the short story «Cat in the Rain» by E.Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway’s “Cat in The Rain” published in 1925 is a short story fulfilled with symbols and meaning. It relates about a young couple’s relationship and misunderstanding. The wife longs to be loved and be protected by her husband but he grants her only ignorance in response.
The action takes place in an Italian hotel having as main characters a young American couple. It could possibly be the period after WW1:”Italians came from a long way off to look up at the war monument.” Looking through the window, on a rainy day, the wife sees a cat in the rain hiding underneath a table. She feels bad for the cat and she decides to go and get it. While her husband was busy reading a book the woman goes after the cat but it is no longer under the table. When she comes back into her room she starts complaining to her husband about wanting a cat, long hair, new clothes and other goods. The husband doesn’t seem to care much about his wife’s desires. The story ends with a maid knocking at the door holding a tortoise-shell cat for the American woman.
The story has as main characters the wife and her husband. The author changes dramatically his opinion and calls her “The American girl” when she starts acting childish and choses to call a cat “kitty” several times: («I’m going down and get that kitty»/ «I want to have a kitty to sit on my lap»/ “I want a kitty”); She never stops complaining about the things she wants: (” And I want to eat at a table with my own silver and I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brush my hair out in front of a mirror and I want a kitty and I want some new clothes.” )Moreover “And I want to eat at a table with my own silver” prompts us the fact that the young couple doesn’t have anything of their own.The girl’s feeling of loneliness is visible right from the beginning of the story till the end. Her husband doesn’t listen or care much about what she is saying. He lies in bed and is concerned only about the book he is reading:” George was not listening. He was reading his book.”
Another character of the story is the American girl/wife’s husband named George. Even though at the beginning he offers himself to go and get the cat for his wife during the rest of the story George doesn’t care about anything but his reading: “‘Oh, shut up and get something to read,’ George said. He was reading again.”/” George was reading again.”.
The owner of the hotel is a minor character of the story:” the hotel owner stood up and bowed to her as she passed the office. His desk was at the far end of the office. He was an old man and very tall.” The American girl/wife looked smitten with the padrone whereas there is no mention of her being in love with her husband and vice versa, not even a slightest bit:” He stood behind his desk in the far end of the dim room. The wife liked him. She liked the deadly serious way he received any complaints. She liked his dignity. She liked the way he wanted to serve her. She liked the way he felt about being a hotel-keeper. She liked his old, heavy face and big hands.” There is something about the hotel owner that inspires an instant admiration for the American girl/wife, he treats her the way her husband doesn’t:” As the American girl passed the office, the padrone bowed from his desk. Something felt very small and tight inside the girl. The padrone made her feel very small and at the same time really important. She had a momentary feeling of being of supreme importance.”
As I can mention a few themes this story depicts, I find them being in a strong correlation and having a crucial impact on the couple’s relationship. One of the themes revealed in the story is the lack of communication that further, in the wife’s case, develops into complete loneliness.
The title of the story “Cat in The Rain” is extremely symbolic and might be decoded as the wife’s yearn for a child. In sustaining these two hypothesis, the author retells about the cat personifying it using “SHE”:” The cat was trying to make herself so compact that she would not be dripped on.”
In order to draw the reader’s attention the author uses a number of stylistic devices. First to be mentioned are the repetitions used by the main character, the wife: “I wanted it so much.
To conclude, the author reveals the lack of communication and selfishness as being relationship destroyers. These are the ones to put the happiness of a young family in jeopardy. It is such a hollow little life that one leads if not showing any kind of affection. As the cat is brought for the lady, at the end, there is still hope, as in the midst of turmoil beautiful things may or may not happen.

On Nadya’s «The benefits and challenges of students’ internship in Moldovan schools(second draft)»

Dear Nadya, here are some things I’d like to mention:
1st paragraph
— «the would-be teachers has to gain» use «have»
-3d sentence you shoud reconsider the word order and if we write about «benefits and challenges» wouldn’t be better to use » both challenging and advantageous»

2nd paragraph
-the would-be teacher makes while he/she teaches ??
— «his/her primary function» sounds like talking about a computer that has certain functions
-«haw to use correctly words» how to correctly use the words?

paragraph3
-«During their first lesson many students are afraid not to do something wrong and spoil the lesson, but this period helps them to overcome this feeling.» too long and not clear. What students?the ones that teach or learn? What feeling?

4th paragraph
-you could use the word «internship» itself in the first sentence not «this period» so that it is clearer.
-«taken in account» taken into account
-«an excellent opportunity to develop the would-be teacher’s skills and abilities» what skills and abilities?

You’ve done a very good job Nadya,as always!
Good luck!

A COMMENT ON NADYA’S «The benefits and challenges of students’ internship in Moldovan schools»

As for unknown reasons I’ve tried to post a comment on your blog,I failed and I needed to type it again. I posted it on my on page this time.
Dear Nadya,
I like your essay :its structure, vocabulary and arguments given. I enjoy reading your writings.
Nevertheless I would like to point out some unclear things I’ve notice in the essay. Firstly I’ve checked the dicionaries and only after that I made my point.
Paragraph 1
-»The internship is a period during which a student goes in a school and acts as a teacher of the specialty he/she learns» I would paraphrase it because you’re saying like the internship is typical only for students that are future teachers.
-«the specialty he/she learns» is a speciality learned?
-«which is promoted as a rule in schools or other, during the autumn or winter time.» I believe you’ve missed something right after «ot other»

paragraph 2
-«The challenges the students encounter in Moldovan schools can have different nature, but the most frequent is the lack of experience concerning the work with children, although they pass a course of didactics at the university.» The sentence is way too long and confusing.
-«in such way that»  isn’t it «in such a way»?
-«authoritarian with them» is the word «authoritarian» and » with them» used approprately used here ?Wouldn’t the words «strict» or «stern» fir better ?
-«It is hard to avoid this type of mistakes, even with a good training, considering that all the time a teacher has to deal with unplanned situations.» It’s a long sentence and a bit unclear, needs paraphrasing.

paragraph 3
-» The experience in the work with pupils» is the preposition «with»  correctly used here? It eventually does sound like a translation from romanian.
-» they a young human being » Did you want to say » they are young human beings»?
-«they have to be understand and guide»  «understood» and «guided»

Benefits and Challenges of Student’s Intership In Moldova. II draft

An internship is an excellent way of gaining experience and learning the benefits and challenges of the job one has chosen. Before starting to work in a particular field, students are in need of experience. Moldovan students are granted this opportunity in their third or/and four years of study. Besides benefits, the internship provides the students with a number of challenges.
One of the benefits of the student’s internship in Moldova is gaining more experience as a specialist in a certain field. The fact of receiving more knowledge and experience is the main benefit one can obtain before pursuing his/her career. Together with the experience comes not only the process of teaching but of learning as well.  During the period of internship one discovers new things to be used later on in his/her professional career.
On the other hand, the internship can be a stressful and time consuming process. Having different types of children in a classroom can cause stress and troubles to a teacher. This is one of the most challenging parts about the internship. As a teacher to be, one has to find a right way of keeping all the children involved in the work they’re doing. In order to succeed in achieving and maintaining  a good teacher-student relationship a teacher has to work hard. He/she needs time for writing lesson projects and preparing interesting materials, interact and understand each of the pupils. Therefore, preparing and teaching a good lesson takes time, patience and hard work.
To conclude, the internship in Moldova offers students both benefits and challenges. All of them, the good and bad are useful and have to be taken into consideration by young specialists. Either way, experiencing an internship is the best way of receiving a proper experience for one’s future job.

P.S: No paragraphs and indentation, all of it disappears once I post the content.(

Features of academic writing

Features of The Academic Writing
The academic writing style encompasses a strict set of well-structured characteristics , rules and requirements to be followed when writing an Academic paper. Respecting its key features will further help you elaborating an exquisite and persuasive piece of work . The ordinary writing, the one that we write for fun, strives to delight the reader. The Academic writing is supposed to be dry yet smart , clear yet complex. As far as the academic writing is concerned some of the main features to be pointed out are as follows:
The structure and paragraphing of an academic writing are first to be mentioned . The basic rule is for your work to have an introduction , body and conclusion. All of the above should have a fitting connection one with the other as well as with the title. The three main components are separated into paragraphs whereas each paragraph should reveal one single idea. Furthermore the topic sentence used at the beginning of each paragraph conveys an argument that is to be explained and proven within the entire paragraph. The supporting sentences come to sustain and confirm the topic sentences and as a final result to form a concluding sentence.
Secondly, when writing , it is very important to use language that fits the audience and matches the aim of the academic work written. An inappropriate use of language can be proven to be crucial for your work and barely inacceptable. Slang and idiomatic expressions are to be avoided by one who writes in academic style. Amongst the forbidden areas is the biased language so the writer has to exclude language with a racial, ethnic , group or gender bias. Thus one of the keys to a successful writing is a fitting vocabulary. Knowing the purpose of your work and the audience you’re presenting it to will help picking the right language to be used.
Thirdly , there is no room for emotive language in an academic work. One cannot use emotionally colored words and expressions for approaching a point. The language should imply a considerable degree of formality with zero emotivity. Moreover the academic style doesn’t allow the use of questions .The author depicts a certain topic giving a list of arguments and there are no questions and no answers just a clear point he struggles to make.
Finally, the writer has to take into consideration all of the above mentioned .In addition to that there are many other important features that have to stick together as one and produce a successful piece of academic writing.

New Course of Writing. Expectations2

A course in Academic Writing as any other new courses deals with a certain number of expectations students have. Before we digg deeper into it first of all I expect to find out what  Academic Writing is in the full sense of the word. Secondly the idea of exploring its characteristics, rules or even tricks to be followed is appealing to me. Its not a big secret that writing takes time, skills and a great amount of work but I expect this new and specialized course would further help us incrementally improve our writing techniques. Hopefully by the end of the course we’ll become skilfull graduates of the Faculty of Letters because knowing elaborating your thoughts and ideas on paper is far more than an accomplishment for any person, especially for a linguist.

New Course of Writing. Expectations

A course of Writing is one of the basic steps to be taking while studying at the Faculty of Letters .As from many other new courses I expect we dig deeper into academic writing and the more common one as well. It would be appealing to me not only as for a student to find out more of its characteristics and rules or even some tricks to be followed. Its not a big secret that writing takes time, skills and a great amount of work but the more you write the bigger your imagination gets. Studying at the faculty of letters should involve praising «writing» as being the most magnificent way of elaborating our ideas and thoughts more vigorously as well as artfully.A new course is always a challenge for a student but succeeding in it would be far more than an accomplishment indeed.

Writing Self- confidence

Just a little reminder for myself about my writing, hopefully it helps you to break the ice and do your job too!:

  • YOU CONTROL THE WORLD!
  • YOU ARE THE BOSS!
  • YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT.
  • YOU NEED NO PERMISSION.
  • I REPEAT:
  • YOU NEED NO PERMISSION.
  • YOU ARE CAPABLE.
  • YOU ARE REALLY  INTELLIGENT.
  • YOU ARE GOING TO FINISH THIS THING WITH NO PROBLEMS
  • YOU GOT THIS, FRIEND
  • YOU GOT THIS!
